Black Rebirth

by Artist Yolanda V. Acree

February 16th from 4-6pm, on display thru March

Collage-making is inherently transformative in practice, starting with disparate pieces, combining, ordering, and scaling, a new work is created that is greater than the sum of its parts. So too is the labor of rebirth, understanding the pieces of ourselves that must be reimagined to create new worlds within and around ourselves. In her first solo exhibition, “Black Rebirth: [Portals/Stories of Transformation and Connection Through Collage]” Yolanda V. Acree invites you to journey with her into this world-building process.

Black Rebirth explores culture, heritage, legacy and liberation, honoring Yolanda’s Eastern Shore roots that extend into the Diaspora. It also explores the artist’s   postpartum and mental health experiences, opining on the vulnerability, alchemy, and sacrifice that is motherhood. Finally, the exhibit will feature a curated collection of past works. This body of work is the culmination of seven years of revelations and rebirths.

Yolanda extends an invitation to connect, reflect, and be inspired by the resilience and power of lineage and spirit through assemblage.

Artist Statement:

“Through the collage medium I explore themes of Black cultural identity and world-making. Black femmes and children comprise the majority of my subjects where they are juxtaposed against rich landscapes and sky-scapes affirming our interconnectedness with our environments and universe. While analog collage is my primary format, I do experiment with digital collage and original photography on occasion.”
